Holiday Cleaning Tips: Prepare Your Home for Guests
TLDR: Focus on guest areas first: entryway, guest bathroom, living room, kitchen. Do not deep clean rooms guests will not see. Start a week ahead, not the day before. A tidy clutter free space matters more than perfect dust free corners.
The holidays are coming and so are the guests. Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner for twenty or having a few family members stay overnight, you want your home to feel welcoming.
But between cooking, shopping, decorating, and everything else, who has time for a top to bottom clean? Here is how to get your home guest ready without losing your mind.
Start With What Guests Will See
Be strategic. You do not need to deep clean your entire house. Focus on the spaces guests will actually use.
Priority One: Entry and Walkways
First impressions matter. The entryway sets the tone for the whole visit.
- Sweep or vacuum the entry
- Shake out or clean entry mats
- Clear clutter from the foyer
- Make space for coats and shoes
- Clean the front door and porch light
Priority Two: Guest Bathroom
The bathroom guests will use needs attention.
- Deep clean toilet, sink, and shower or tub
- Stock fresh towels
- Refill soap and toilet paper
- Empty trash
- Wipe down mirrors and fixtures
- Add a nice hand towel and maybe a candle
Priority Three: Kitchen and Dining
Where the food happens needs to be ready.
- Clear and clean countertops
- Clean stovetop and sink
- Wipe down cabinet fronts
- Clean the refrigerator interior if guests will be getting drinks
- Shine faucet and handles
- Clean the dining table and chairs
Priority Four: Living and Gathering Spaces
Where guests will sit and mingle.
- Vacuum or clean floors
- Dust obvious surfaces
- Fluff and arrange pillows
- Clear clutter and personal items
- Wipe down coffee tables and side tables
What You Can Skip
Unless guests are staying overnight in your bedroom or kids' rooms, those spaces can wait. Same with the office, basement, or any room with a closed door.
Do not exhaust yourself cleaning spaces no one will see.
If Guests Are Staying Overnight
Add the guest bedroom to your priority list.
- Fresh sheets and made bed
- Clear dresser or closet space for their belongings
- Empty bedside trash
- Clean any surfaces
- Extra blankets and pillows available
A Week Before the Gathering
Do not leave everything for the last minute. Spread tasks across the week.
One week out:
- Do a declutter sweep of common areas
- Deep clean the guest bathroom
- Catch up on laundry
A few days out:
- Clean kitchen thoroughly
- Vacuum and mop floors
- Dust living areas
Day before:
- Quick bathroom wipe down
- Final declutter
- Take out trash
- Set out fresh towels
Day of:
- Quick surface wipe in kitchen and bath
- Fluff pillows
- Light a candle
- Relax and enjoy your guests
Quick Tricks That Make a Big Difference
- Put out fresh hand towels in the bathroom
- Light a candle 30 minutes before guests arrive
- Put a vase of flowers on the table
- Turn on lamps instead of overhead lights for warmth
- Play soft background music
- Put clutter in a basket or behind closed doors temporarily
These touches make a home feel welcoming even if it is not perfectly clean.
The Day After
Holiday gatherings create mess. Plan for post event cleanup.
- Load the dishwasher immediately
- Put away food before bed
- Quick sweep of high traffic areas
- Leave the rest for tomorrow
You do not have to clean everything that night. Get the perishables put away and the dishes started, then rest.
When to Hire Help
The holidays are stressful enough. If cleaning is one more thing weighing on you, let someone else handle it.
Many of my clients book a pre-holiday clean. I come in a day or two before the gathering, do a thorough clean of the spaces guests will use, and leave you free to focus on cooking and enjoying time with family.
It is one of the best gifts you can give yourself during the busy season.
