Spring Cleaning Checklist for Tiffin and Bucyrus Homes

After months of closed windows and running the furnace, Ohio homes need a reset. Dust settles in places you do not normally see. Salt and mud tracked in from winter builds up near entryways. And all that dry indoor air leaves a film on surfaces you forgot existed.

Here is a practical room by room checklist for spring cleaning your Tiffin or Bucyrus home. I have been cleaning homes in this area for years, so I know what our local winters do to houses.

Start With the Big Picture

Before diving into individual rooms, tackle these whole house tasks first.

• Open windows on a mild day to air out the house
• Replace furnace filters (they work hard all winter)
• Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures in every room
• Wipe down all baseboards
• Clean air vents and returns
• Wash interior windows

• Organize the pantry and toss expired items
• Scrub the sink and garbage disposal

Kitchen grease builds up slowly. You might not notice it until you wipe a cabinet door and see the difference. Pay extra attention to the area around the stove where cooking splatter collects.

Bathroom Refresh

Bathrooms need attention beyond the regular weekly clean.

• Scrub tile grout (a toothbrush works well in corners)

• Wash shower curtains or liners

• Clean behind and around the toilet

Dust mites love bedding. If you have allergies, this is especially important. Washing bedding in hot water kills dust mites better than cold.

Living Areas

Living rooms and family rooms are high traffic zones that need attention.

• Vacuum upholstered furniture (including under cushions)
• Spot clean fabric or clean leather surfaces
• Dust and polish wood furniture
• Clean TV screens and electronics
• Vacuum or clean area rugs
• Move furniture to vacuum underneath
• Dust bookshelves and decor
• Clean light switch plates and door handles

Entryways and Mudrooms

Ohio winters mean salt, sand, and mud at every entrance. These areas take a beating.

• Deep clean entry mats or replace if worn
• Scrub floors to remove salt residue
• Wipe down coat hooks, shoe storage, and benches
• Clean the inside of the front door
• Organize winter gear and store what you will not need

Spots Most People Forget

• Light switches and door handles (touched constantly, rarely cleaned)
• Tops of door frames and window trim
• Lampshades (dust clings to fabric)
• Behind toilets
• Refrigerator coils (underneath or behind)

Allergy Season Prep

Spring in Ohio means pollen. If anyone in your home has allergies, add these steps.

• Replace HVAC filters with high quality allergen filters
• Vacuum with a HEPA filter vacuum if possible
• Wash bedding weekly during peak pollen season
• Keep windows closed on high pollen days
• Wipe down pets if they go outside

For a typical 3 bedroom home in our area, expect spring cleaning to take 8 to 12 hours of focused work. Most people spread it over 2 to 3 weekends.
