What to Expect From Your First House Cleaning Visit

By Trina | February 2025

If you have never hired a professional house cleaner before, you might feel a little nervous about what to expect. That is completely normal. Having someone new in your home takes trust, and knowing what will happen makes the whole experience more comfortable.

Here is a walkthrough of what a first cleaning visit typically looks like.

Before the First Visit

The Quote Process

Before your first cleaning, you will get a quote. This might happen over the phone, through text, or sometimes with a brief in-home visit. I will ask about the size of your home, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, any pets, and what type of cleaning you need.

Be honest about the current state of your home. If it has been a while since a deep clean, that is okay. I just need to know so I can give you an accurate quote and allow enough time.

Light Preparation

You do not need to clean before the cleaner arrives. That defeats the purpose. But it helps to:

  • Pick up clothes, toys, and personal items from floors and surfaces
  • Put away valuables or anything you do not want touched
  • Secure pets or let me know where they will be
  • Make sure I can access the home (leave a key, unlock the door, or be there)

Arrival and Walkthrough

On the day of the first cleaning, I will arrive at the scheduled time with all my supplies and equipment. I bring everything needed, so you do not have to provide anything unless you have specific products you prefer.

For a first visit, I like to do a quick walkthrough with the homeowner if they are available. This lets you point out any areas of concern, tell me about delicate surfaces, and show me where things are. If you will not be home, you can send this information ahead of time.

What I Will Ask About

  • Any rooms or areas to skip or prioritize
  • Delicate items or surfaces that need special care
  • How you want beds handled (change sheets, just make them, leave alone)
  • Pet locations and any concerns
  • Where to put trash and recycling
  • Any security system codes or quirks about the home

The First Cleaning Takes Longer

Expect the first cleaning to take more time than future visits. This is normal for several reasons:

  • I am learning your home and where everything is
  • Built up grime and dust takes extra effort to address
  • I am establishing a baseline of cleanliness to maintain

A home that will take two hours on a regular visit might take three hours the first time. This is especially true if it has been a while since a professional cleaning or if you are moving into a new place.

What Gets Cleaned

A standard cleaning includes:

  • Dusting all surfaces, furniture, and decor
  • Vacuuming all floors and carpets
  • Mopping hard floors
  • Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms (toilets, sinks, tubs, mirrors)
  • Cleaning kitchen surfaces, appliances exterior, and sink
  • Making beds and tidying up
  • Emptying trash

Deep cleaning adds things like inside appliances, baseboards, window sills, and detailed attention to buildup areas.

Communication Is Key

The first visit is also about building a relationship. I want to know how you like things done. Some people want everything touched. Others have areas they prefer left alone. Some want the dishwasher run, others do not.

There is no wrong answer. The goal is for you to come home to a space that feels exactly the way you want it.

After the first cleaning, I will check in to see if everything met your expectations. If something was missed or you want something done differently, just tell me. I would rather know and fix it than have you be disappointed.

After the Cleaning

When the cleaning is done, your home will feel different. Surfaces will shine, floors will be clean, and everything will smell fresh. Many first-time clients tell me they did not realize how much stress a messy house was causing until they experienced the relief of coming home to a clean one.

For recurring service, each visit builds on the last. The home stays cleaner between visits, and the maintenance becomes easier.
