Questions to Ask Before Hiring a House Cleaner

TLDR: Ask about insurance, what is included, and who will actually clean your home. Get clear pricing upfront. Check reviews from real customers. Trust your gut about whether you feel comfortable with someone in your space.

Letting someone into your home is a big decision. You want someone you can trust, someone who does quality work, and someone who respects your space. But how do you find that person?

Here are the questions I recommend asking before you hire any cleaning service. These will help you separate the professionals from the fly by night operations.

Questions About the Business

Are you licensed and insured?

This is the most important question. A legitimate cleaning business should carry liability insurance at minimum. This protects you if something gets damaged or if someone is injured in your home. Ask for proof of insurance, not just a yes or no answer.

How long have you been in business?

Experience matters. A cleaner who has been around for years has figured out how to do the job well and keep customers happy. New cleaners can be good too, but you are taking more of a chance.

Who will actually be cleaning my home?

Some companies send different people each time. Others have a consistent cleaner for your home. If consistency matters to you, ask about this upfront. It is also fair to ask about background checks for anyone entering your home.

Do you have references or reviews?

Any established cleaner should have happy customers willing to vouch for them. Check Google reviews, Facebook recommendations, or ask for references you can contact directly.

Questions About the Service

What is included in a regular cleaning?

Get specific. Does the price include inside the refrigerator? Windows? Baseboards? Different cleaners include different things in their standard service. Know what you are paying for so there are no surprises.

What is not included?

Just as important as what is included. Common exclusions might be inside ovens, interior windows, laundry, or dishes. Knowing this upfront prevents misunderstandings.

Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?

Most professional cleaners bring everything they need. Some may ask you to provide certain products if you have preferences. Clarify this before the first visit.

What products do you use?

If you have allergies, pets, or preferences for eco friendly products, ask about what they use. A good cleaner should be able to accommodate requests within reason.

How long will it take?

An experienced cleaner should be able to estimate how long your home will take based on size and condition. This helps you plan your day and also tells you if the price is reasonable.

Questions About Pricing

How do you charge?

Cleaners typically charge either by the hour or a flat rate for the job. Both can work well. Flat rates give you certainty about cost. Hourly rates can be more flexible if your needs change.

What is the total price including everything?

Get the full price, not just a range. Ask about any additional fees that might apply. A trustworthy cleaner should be able to give you a clear number.

Do you offer discounts for regular service?

Most cleaners offer better rates for weekly or biweekly clients compared to one time cleans. Ask about this if you plan to have regular service.

What is your cancellation policy?

Life happens. Know what happens if you need to cancel or reschedule. Most cleaners require 24 to 48 hours notice.

Questions About Expectations

What do you need from me before you come?

Some cleaners ask that you pick up clutter before they arrive so they can focus on actual cleaning. Others will work around whatever state the home is in. Know what to expect.

Do I need to be home?

Many clients give cleaners a key or entry code so they can clean while the homeowner is at work. Others prefer to be home. Discuss what works for both of you.

How do I communicate concerns?

If something is not cleaned to your satisfaction, how should you handle it? A professional cleaner should welcome feedback and be willing to make things right.

What is your satisfaction guarantee?

Good cleaners stand behind their work. Ask what happens if you are not happy with the cleaning.

Red Flags to Watch For

Some warning signs that a cleaner might not be the right choice.

  • They cannot or will not provide proof of insurance
  • They are vague about pricing or what is included
  • They have no online presence or reviews
  • They pressure you to commit immediately
  • They want cash only with no receipt
  • They are hard to reach or do not return calls
  • Their price seems too good to be true

Trust Your Instincts

Beyond all the practical questions, pay attention to how you feel. This person will be in your home, around your belongings, and maybe around your family and pets. You should feel comfortable with them.

A good cleaner wants you to be comfortable too. They should be happy to answer questions, explain their process, and address any concerns you have.
